WENHAM COUNCIL ON AGING BOARD MEETING MINUTES JUNE 8, 2010 Board Members Attending: Roseann Brozenske, Susan Carp, Jean Eddy, Dick Eddy, Luci Lynch, Paul Mendonca and Cil Moscatiello Guest: Catherine Tinsley Meeting opened at 1:30 by Interim Director Susan Carp Minutes of the meeting of March 9th were approved as submitted. DIRECTOR’S REPORT It was reported that during the month of May, the office was covered by Trudy Reid and Susan Carp, Tuesdays were covered by Gerry, and John Marx managed the COA Van two days a week. It was a team effort, but the office was kept open. Susan will act as interim Director. Once her Graduate work is complete, she will be available 5 days a week. Senior Meals - Trudy has had continuing conversations with SeniorCare about Enon Village continuing as a meal site. Although the COA is happy with 10-l2 residents regularly attending, those numbers are low for SeniorCare to fully support. It would be extremely beneficial if we could raise the attendance to 18-20 per meal. Funding for this program ends in September. Attendence needs to be supported. SeniorCare, Inc. - During the month of May there were 3 referrals to SeniorCare. They will be providing a free nutrition seminar at Enon Village on June 23rd. Board members will receive an Email when details have been received by Susan. SeniorCare is holding it’s Annual Meeting on June 18th at 8 A.M. Anyone interested in attending should contact Susan. They are also holding a Sunset Cruise from Gloucester to Salem on July 15th, as a Fund Raiser. The cost is $25 per person Outreach - Gerry is very active with the low vision group. She is looking into a field trip to the Perkins School for the Blind. They offer tours and discuss tools available for those with declining vision. This trip would be for Wenham and Hamilton residents. It may be possible to use the Van if it can be arranged for a Monday. We will begin a new effort for outreach. Every phone call or van pickup is a potential opportunity for contact. We will be updating rider information, and in the process asking riders if they are experiencing other challenges. Status of the COA - There are ongoing discussions between the Selectmen, Town Administrative Offices and various others, regarding the goal to create a proper organizational structure that will meet the needs of seniors, and respective Town administrators. Still under consideration is the possibility of a single Director for both the Wenham and Hamilton COAs This does NOT mean merging the two COAs. No response has been received from Hamilton There was considerable discussion as to why Wenham should not continue the search for a new Director, Instead of just waiting for a response from Hamilton. The Board feels STRONGLY we should continue with posting etc. and see if there are any responses. Even if the job were limited to 15 hours per week, there is still a good chance this might appeal to a qualified candidate. If another option presents itself, things could always be changed. As a result of the Board’s stated concerns, Susan will contact the Town Administrator and present our case. Kite Day - Dick Eddy reported that the program is well under way. The committee will be meeting on June 16th to complete plans. The event will be held on August 14th from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. at Birch Plains . He noted that the Beverly Airport restaurant “Something Different” as received special permission to provide hot dogs and hamburgers. The Scouts will do the setup and cleanup and also sell raffle tickets. The Beverly and Hamilton/ Wenham Rec Depts. will preregister, with a top figure of 500. Publicity will take many forms, fliers, camp attendees, banners, sandwich Boards, etc. Funding includes $500 from the HW Rec Department, $250 from the Rotary Club and $250 from the Friends. Handiman - Dick stated that they have installed 11 Air conditioners, but there has been almost no other work requested. They are planning to construct 25 foot stools, to be sold at the Wenham Craft Fair on August 28th. Movies - The next movie will be “Precious” which will be shown on Tuesday June 15th at 10 A.M. This will be the last showing until the fall. There was some discussion about possibly changing future movie days to Mondays, when the van may be available for rides. Coffees - Several ideas are being considered for the fall. Summer Programs - Plans are to hold the Ice cream social at a date in August to be determined. Susan will organize the event. Fall Programs - Several things are under consideration: a balance program, a nutritionist, and possibly a free exercise program daily, say from 10-11 A.M. Town Quilt - There is a problem with regard to the space being considered for hanging the work. Furniture may need to be moved. Dick Eddy will talk with Jack Hauck , Friends president , about a solution. The Quilters are opposed to displaying this work anywhere other than the Selectmen’s Room for which it was designed. It was noted that this is the last meeting for Director Jean Eddy. The Board thanks her for all her work, and wishes her well OLD BUSINESS New Members - Catherine Tinsley , who attended this meeting as a guest, has agreed to serve, and will be formally invited in September. Next Meeting - September 14, 2010, at 1:30 Lucille Lynch, Secretary HAVE A GREAT SUMMER !!!
